Every single Sunday night at Irene's Pub, Birdie Whyte wrangles her crew of folk musicians, armed with an arsenal of banjos and guitars (and some games and gags) to put on The Sunday Night Revue! Acting as master of ceremonies, Birdie sets the scene for the evening by leading the troupe with some of her sweet, poetic songs, before passing the spotlight along to each performer.
Marc Albert, Sal, Nik Field, and C.A. & Sonny all take turns commanding the stage and supporting one another. Individually, each performer is a seasoned musician in their own right, and the Sunday Night Revue allows them the platform to collaborate with lyrical whimsy, dulcet instrumentation and playful banter. The resulting show feels reminiscent of a living room jam, offering a similar relaxed atmosphere where everyone can take part in some way.
The whole room can enjoy the fun games and silly prizes that Birdie offers, drink specials from the friendly bartenders, and delicious eats from the Irene's kitchen. Admission is free, tips are welcome and silly (or awesome) prize donations are greatly appreciated.
Birdie Whyte carved out her soulful sound with a gifted banjo, some poems and a whole lotta playing between the Ottawa Valley and the Maritimes. A passionate songwriter, Whyte sews melodic imagery into her songs that walk the line of light and dark, resulting in seriously tongue in cheek tunes.
Grabbing any instrument available, C.A. Jackson uses his rich baritone voice to breathe new life into Antiquated songs. His jocular lyrics and dynamic whistling are most often accompanied by his rhythmic finger style guitar playing. With the rest of the Revue, C.A. uses a mandolin or banjo to pick familiar melodies, and holds down the low end of vocal harmonies.
Sonny Aiken is a cowboy, and a clown—just as entertaining off-stage as on. Aiken has released over 10 albums during his 10+ years of performing and touring, and he’s not done yet. In addition to the Revue, you’ll also find him performing regularly with C.A. as part of C.A. & Sonny.
Marc Albert is a simple baritone with simple songs for simple people. Country hits, folk bits and his own writs comprise his repertoire played typically on the classical guitar.
Enigmatic and mesmerizing, Sal sings about the twists and turns of life with wit, insight, and occasionally humour—you might even catch him shaving on stage. With the classic sound of folk singers past ringing through his voice and harmonica, Sal is a sight to be heard.
When Nik isn't busy manning the soundboard, he’s usually pickin’ his way through an old folk tune or sliding into the grand finale with some lap steel. Nik’s evocative, story-driven lyrics make him a performer worth checking out for fans of heartfelt songwriting.
